The Big Apple!

We are back! New York was exhausting – didnt get back to hotel until 10.00pm each night. We arrived from Gloversville at mid afternoon on Saturday, and headed into town (shuttlebus to nearby airport, then train – about 50 minutes). First evening – Macy’s and Times Square:

On our first full day we spent most of the day on Ellis Island, the immigrants “Gateway” into America for the first part of the 20th century. We had great views of the city-scape:

We then moved on to the Twin Towers site (the part-built tower above is one of the new towers on the site), followed by a very moving visit to the nearby church used by the rescue workers as a “refuge”. The church included messages from families of the bereaved, as well as photos of some who lost their lives on “9/11”.  This was followed by a night time ascent of the Empire State Building to see the lights of New York from the 86th floor observation deck.

Our final day was spent in Central Park, which is huge and has everything from woods to semi-formal areas

We had to head back to the hotel by mid afternoon to collect our luggage, and catch the 7pm flight back to Birmingham. A wonderful holiday – a “journal” will appear in due course, along with photos, once we have reduced it from about 1000 to a more manageable number!
